George Wilkins Kendall was a founder of the and the first documented American war correspondent. He was also a sheep rancher in the area which became Kendall County, Texas. Married in 1849 to Adeline de Valcourt, he had four children: Georgina Kendall Fellowes, who collected material relating to her father's life; George William Kendall; Henry Fletcher Kendall, a West Point graduate who served in Cuba, Texas, and the Philippines; and Caroline Louise Kendall. Fletcher's son, William Henry Kendall, was also a West Point graduate and served during World War II in Hawaii. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, diaries, photographs, genealogies, biographies, books, and artifacts. The Kendall family papers include personal materials, business records, and historical sources that span three generations beginning with George Wilkins Kendall. Correspondence includes George Wilkins Kendall's letters to the from Europe and the front lines during the Mexican War. Diaries of George Wilkins Kendall, his wife, Adeline, and his daughter, Caroline, are also included (some of the diaries are in French). Georgina Kendall Fellowes' correspondence with Kendall biographer, Fayette Copeland, provides details of George W. Kendall's life. Business records deal with the maintenance of the Boerne Cemetery and property records relating to the family ranches. Photographs document the ranches and family members. George Wilkins Kendall settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1835. In 1837, he and Francis A. Lumsden established the Times-Picayune, a New Orleans newspaper. Kendall participated in the Texan Santa Fé Expedition in 1841 and was subsequently held prisoner in Mexico. George Wilkins Kendall, newspaper correspondent, writer, and rancher was born in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, in 1809. He learned the printer's trade with Horace Greeley while still a boy and used this as a means of making his livelihood.
